Position Overview

The Coding Specialist I collects appropriate, timely, and accurate health information about services provided including demographic data, appropriate length of stay, third-party payer, and other related data concerning patients.  The Coding Specialist I will collect data in compliance with the appropriate laws, regulations, standards, and policies. The Coding Specialist I accurately and efficiently, reviews billing and medical documentation for compliance with AMA, Medicare, Medicaid and third party payer billing guidelines and assigning appropriate CPT-4, HCPCS and ICD-10 codes based on the documentation.

Provides regular feedback to management and physicians regarding omissions and irregularities in documentation and suggested improvements. Demonstrates commitment to conducting business lawfully and ethically by consistently adhering to office policies, procedures and regulations.

 

Essential Functions

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Abstracts relevant clinical and demographic information from the medical record to assign ICD-10 and CPT codes in accordance with coding and reimbursement guidelines.
  • Identifies principal and secondary diagnosis with minimal error based on the national based standards.
  • Codes with an accuracy of 97% based on QA internal reviews.
  • Records all diagnostic procedures and assigns appropriate procedure codes.
  • Requests diagnosis from physicians when information is not recorded.
  • Determines and records the required medical information.
  • Updates coding procedures and guidelines.  Works with various staff in coordinating medical information and patient charts.
  • Relay pertinent information to the Client Relations Manager and Compliance Officer, as needed.
  • Adhere to assigned work schedule and lunch break.
  • Comply with federal, state and company policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Participating in educational activities and attending monthly staff meetings, as needed.
  • Maintaining strictest confidentiality; adhering to all HIPAA guidelines and regulations
  • Must achieve established productivity and quality measures.
  • Performing other work-related duties as assigned

 

 

Qualifications/Knowledge and Skills

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.  Associate or Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • A minimum of one year of hospital or medical office coding experience required.
  • One of the following credentials preferred: RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician), RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator), or any other American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) coding credential, or any other American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) coding credential. 
  • Knowledge of medical billing/collection practice
  • Knowledge of business office procedures
  • Knowledge of basic medical coding and third-party operating procedures and practices
  • Skill in answering a telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner
  • Must be well organized and detail-oriented
